St Edmund's Episcopal Church San Marino

STEDY – December 12, 2018

It’s hard not to be distracted by a light, particularly when there is a change to a light. Perhaps that is why we have chosen to use it to communicate so many different things. When one is flashing on your phone you know someone has left a message. When lights flash at a theater we know that it’s time to return to our seats and when that little red one comes on in your car, you know you are going to have to fork over some cash. Some changes in light can even cause people to sneeze. Light is a slippery and tricky thing as it slides under things, through things, the tiniest drop can ruin perfectly good darkness.
Our ancestors would have had little to no understanding of the concept of light pollution. Darkness was familiar to them but on nights where clouds were few, the stars would have been multitude. It would have been almost impossible to not find yourself looking up almost constantly into that night sky. As we are distracted by changes in light, should a star appear that is brighter than others, and in a location previously believed to be unoccupied, this change would have been noticed by those who spent so much of their night looking up.
For most of us it’s almost impossible to imagine a change that would draw such attention and yet this is the time of year when we see lights popping up on homes, trees, in windows – the other day I saw a car aglow with tiny colored bulbs. These additions are beautiful, hopeful changes that makes kids giggle and adults smile. They speak beautifully to the change made when Jesus was born. As we notice the décor that shines so bright in afternoons that darken so early, may we feel that hope and lightness as we celebrate what His life has brought to all of ours.
