During the month of July our Sunday school has been studying Saul, the first king of Israel. One of Saul’s strongest traits was his ability to build a strong army and yesterday Sophie Olson, a teacher of Shakespearean stage combat, trained our students on how to be soldiers.
Sophie Olson led the students through drills, obstacle courses and, with the help of a dozen foam swords, taught a fighting choreography as tribal drums thundered in the background.
After our “soldiers” had been adequately trained, they engaged in a mock battle of the Israelites versus the Amalekites, a battle which caused Saul to be dethroned despite his being victorious.
