Genesis 28:10-15
10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
The shower caddy, the laundry bag, the mini fridge, when someone sees these things in your shopping cart they know you are heading to college. Its that time of year when new bedding is being purchased, roommate assignments are being received and meal plans are being deliberated over like a battle plan as parents anxiously do some last minute preparation. Whether its going to college, grad school, or any new place, it can be so fun until that moment when you realize that everything in this new place is, well, new. The bed the different, the ceiling is different, the view outside your window – all different and even if it’s only for a half a second, it’s easy to have a moment when you long for something familiar, something from home.
After Rebekah helped one son steal his father’s blessing out from under her other, Rebekah knew it wasn’t safe for Jacob to stick around. She concocted yet another lie in which she told her husband she didn’t like the Hittite women among whom they lived and so Jacob was going to their homeland of Paddan Aram so Jacob could find a wife there. Isaac, still unaware of the way he has been tricked, blesses Jacob yet again and Jacob sets out. When it gets dark he finds a place to lie down for the night. Instead of his usual bed, the ground will have to do and a rock becomes his pillow. His twin was the hunter and therefore used to being in the wilderness but Jacob preferred to stay home and so all of this is new to him. As he drifted off to sleep there had to have been a moment when he missed his family, when he longed for something familiar and when he wished he was home.
That night Jacob has a famous dream in which he sees a ladder that extends to heaven. He hears God telling him that he will own the land on which he is sleeping, his descendants will be like dust, spreading out all over. Most importantly, wherever he goes, God will watch over him, God will never leave him. It’s a beautiful dream, Jacob wakes up not only comforted but inspired. God loves him and no matter how far Jacob travels, God will always be with him.
Heading off to college is a time when most students decide to stop going to church. It’s understandable, finding a church away from home can be daunting and then there’s issues of transportation. Those are great reasons but it’s probably more about sleeping in and not being forced to do something anymore. Wherever you find yourself this coming fall, or this coming year, may you feel the blessing Jacob felt in his dream and may you know always that no matter where you go, no matter how far you might even feel as though you have strayed, God is always with, ready to guide you, provide for you and comfort you with His constant presence and love.
